Background of the study
Phonological processes in spoken language evolve rapidly in informal settings, particularly among Nigerian youth. With the rise of social media, Instagram video content has emerged as a key platform where youth communicate using distinctive phonological features such as elision, assimilation, and vowel modification. This study examines how these phonological processes manifest in Nigerian youth slang as captured in Instagram videos. The research will analyze video recordings to identify patterns of phonetic reduction, stress shifts, and intonation modifications that characterize informal speech among young Nigerians (Chukwu, 2023). Additionally, the study explores how these phonological features contribute to identity formation and social belonging in digital communities. By employing both acoustic analysis and content analysis, the research aims to document the interplay between traditional phonological norms and emerging linguistic trends in the digital age (Ibrahim, 2024; Suleiman, 2025). This investigation will contribute to our understanding of language evolution in social media contexts and inform future developments in automated speech recognition and language education tailored to youth communication styles.
Statement of the problem
Despite the widespread use of Instagram among Nigerian youth, there is limited research on the phonological processes shaping youth slang in video content. This gap hinders our understanding of how informal speech patterns evolve online and impact communication clarity and cultural identity (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
1. To document phonological processes in Nigerian youth slang on Instagram.
2. To analyze their impact on communication and identity.
3. To suggest implications for speech recognition technology.
Research questions:
1. What phonological processes characterize Nigerian youth slang on Instagram?
2. How do these processes affect listener perception?
3. What are the implications for digital communication?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it sheds light on phonological changes in Nigerian youth slang within Instagram videos, offering insights for linguists and technology developers. The findings will inform strategies for improving automated speech recognition and enhancing digital communication among youth (Suleiman, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study focuses solely on phonological processes in Nigerian youth slang as observed in Instagram video content.
Definitions of terms:
1. Phonological Processes: Systematic sound changes in language.
2. Youth Slang: Informal language used predominantly by young people.
3. Instagram Video Content: Short video clips shared on the Instagram platform
